Oyster Harvest

  • 05/05/2023
  • 11:00 AM - 2:30 PM
  • Beach below Bloedel Reserve

Registration

Registration is closed

This is the harvest event prior to the Oyster Celebration. We will be mucking in the mud below Bloedel Reserve to harvest. Learn how to select, sort, and clean oysters. While this is during the school day, kids are encouraged as there is an abundance of intertidal life amongst the oyster nets.

Note:

  • You will get very wet and muddy.
  • Ideally bring waders and extra-tuff style boots.
  • Bring garden gloves.
  • We can dinghy/paddle to the tidal flats, but again remember your boat will get muddy.

We need 5-10 people to help.

Harvest Instructions:

When:
Meet at 10am sharp this Friday (May 5). We should be done between 12 and 1pm.

Where:
We'll meet in the driveway of a private residence, 8542 NE Gordon Drive, Bainbridge Island. There is parking in the gravel loop portion of the driveway at this residence for several cars, and additional parking along NE Gordon Drive. NOTE that I will be at PMYC upper parking lot at 9:40am if anyone wants to carpool over with me. Parking is tight at the harvest site.

What to bring:
Wear sturdy rubber boots and bring gloves (rubber coated Atlas style work the best), other foul weather gear like bibs and raincoats may also be good (it is likely to be raining.) Most of the work will be on our knees sorting oysters from a tarp spread on the beach. Volunteers are welcome to bring a shucking knife as we always slurp a few while we work.

There are no restrooms or fresh water available at the farm site.

Please reach out to me directly if you have any questions/concerns.
