Salty Speaker #1: Transiting the Northwest Passage on a Fiberglass Race Boat

  • 02/27/2026
  • 5:30 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Seabold Hall

Do you dream of seeing polar bears, narwhals, belugas, towering fjords, and icebergs?

Join Rusty Lhamon as he shares the story of adventure and camaraderie aboard Dogbark, a 60-foot BOC round-the-world race boat, during his 2024 voyage through the legendary Northwest Passage. Once deemed impassable, this remote route opens only briefly each summer, and fewer than 500 boats have ever completed the transit. For Dogbark, it was a second attempt at one of sailing’s greatest challenges. Come discover what life is like above the Arctic Circle—among some of the world’s hardiest communities and largest islands.

About Rusty:

Rusty grew up on Bainbridge Island and has been sailing since before he could walk. As a kid, he was part of the inaugural PMYC Sail School class—an experience that clearly made an impact. At just 14, Rusty and fellow PMYC junior Ben Braden took the historic 26ft Danish spitsgatter Galatea on a week-long solo expedition through the San Juans. Following that, Rusty taught sailing as a teenager before heading to Stanford, where he studied electro-mechanical engineering and met his wife, Haley, on the Stanford sailing team—beginning a lifelong partnership both on and off the water.

While Haley decided the Northwest Passage was a little too cold for her tastes, she has shared many other sailing adventures with Rusty and their two sons, Taylor and Barrett.

Professionally, Rusty has spent over 30 years in the electronics industry and now runs U.S. Telco Sales for Sercomm, a Taiwanese electronics manufacturer. Even while navigating the icy waters of the Northwest Passage, he managed to stay connected and conduct business using Starlink. Rusty and Haley are members of the Cruising Club of America and have sailed in four of the world’s five oceans. They look forward to new adventures in warmer latitudes ahead.
