PMYC Junior Sailing Program Overview
The Junior Yacht Club Has Two Main Goals
-To increase participation and better our standings in the regattas held in Canada and Puget Sound.
-To send members of the Junior Yacht Club to national championships such as
the U.S. Sailing Championships held in double and single handed boats. Also
the US Junior Championships held in triple, double, and single handed boats.
Port Madison Yacht Club (and parents) supports an active Junior Sailing
Program. Our Junior members participate in local, regional and High School
sailing events. There are four separate but related events that occur during
the year:
1)PMYC Sailing School
2)Friday evening/Sunday PMYC dinghy racing
3)Northwest Youth Racing Circuit (PMYC hosts the John Adams Memorial Regatta
- JAM)
4)High School Sailing Team (sponsored by High School, not PMYC)
PMYC
Sailing School
Immediately following the end of school, PMYC sponsors a 2-week
sailing school for junior sailors of all skill levels - entirely by volunteer
support. Although open to anyone 10 years or older, PMYC members are given
priority. This is a BYOB event (bring your own boat). Juniors can sign up for
beginner, intermediate or advanced level sailing courses. Students in the
advanced level courses are encouraged to sail either an Optimist Pram (kids
under 15 years old and generally less than 120lbs) or Laser/Laser Radial.
Many of the younger (and lighter – 135lbs) sailors find the Laser
Radial fleet more inviting while some of our more seasoned juniors compete in
a Laser (160lbs+).
Friday evening/Sunday PMYC dinghy racing
Laser/Laser Radials, Optis and Capris gather for informal racing Friday
evenings beginning mid April for buoy racing that runs through the end of
July. Sunday dinghy racing happens in the fall and runs through the middle of
November. Adult participation is high.
Northwest Youth Racing Circuit
Junior sailing events for Optis, Lasers, Laser Radials, 420s and 29ers are run
by many of our area's yacht clubs. Our junior sailors (and seniors) have
actively participated in these regattas with strong results. The fleets are
large and competitive PMYC owns a 6 boat Opti trailer and a 5 boat Laser rig
that parents help transport to regattas.
PMYC has earned the right to host one of these events – the John Adams
Memorial Regatta (JAM). This will be a big event for PMYC and we are
beginning the planning process, so expect a call to volunteer.
High School Sailing Team
Bainbridge Island High School has a Sailing Team that competes on
a regional level with events that can lead to national level sailing
platforms. BIHS is part of the Northwest District of the Interscholastic
Sailing Association (ISSA) that sponsors high school sailing in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. Eligibility is open to both boys and girls in grades
9 through 12. This is not a PMYC sponsored event.
Participating schools with active programs within the district include Bainbridge Island, North Kitsap, Port Angeles, Friday Harbor and Anacortes.
BIHS sailors can compete for National Championships including the Mallory Cup
National Championship (double handed - end of May), the Baker Cup National
Championship (team racing - end of May) and the Cressy Cup National
Championship (single handed – fall). Participating schools arrange dual
and triple club meets during the season - which runs from March to May
–in Lasers and Laser Radial (single handed) and FJ, Lidos, Laser II and
Vanguard 15 (double handed).
