    PMYC June sailing school

    Overview

PMYC's June sailing school is a great way for kids age 8-17 to learn how to sail, or to continue to develop their abilities, in the lovely and protected Port Madison Harbor and beyond as skills allow. This is a 7 day course that runs from 9:00 am to 3:00 PM each day. (Note - only 7 days this year due to Bainbridge schools late ending date this spring)  Most participants provide their own boats, but PMYC does rent a few Optis and Lasers through a lottery held on May 1st. This program starts new sailors at age 8-13, up to about 125 lbs. in Optimist dinghies (Optis). As sailors progress to advanced levels of skill and weight they may enroll in our classes for Lasers and double-handed V-15's. We do not currently offer beginner classes for older kids beyond the Opti size and age range during our June sailing school. Opti dinghy classes are divided by skill into 3 groups, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Cost for the 2017 June sailing school program is $225.00 for members, and $300.00 for non-members. Boat rental if available adds $100.00 per boat for the entire 7 day program.

    Beginner Opti

A class for those with no previous experience, very limited experience, or those who need more time to develop confidence. At the end of Beginner Opti students are generally able to control a boat on their own on all points of sail, and have experience tacking, jibing, rigging their own boats, and sailing to and from the dock. Controlled capsize drills on a calm day are also a part of the curriculum and are considered a very fun part of the class by most students.

    Intermediate Opti

This is generally the second year class for new sailors who have successfully completed beginner Opti or who have an equivalent level of experience. This class will continue to develop and refine skills gained in Beginner Opti and include an introduction to racing concepts and tactics, plus adventures further into Puget Sound as weather permits. Knot tying skills and seamanship will also be introduced and developed.

    Advanced Opti

Most students in their third or year of sailing are at this level. Racing skills and tactics will be included, but we will also focus on other elements of advanced sailing such as navigation, cruising, and some more creative endeavors to challenge sailors who may not be focused solely on racing as their ultimate sailing objective.

    Lasers and V-15's

These classes are reserved for sailors who are at the advanced level of ability and are too large for the Opti. We may have separate classes for each boat, or we may combine them depending on enrollment demand. If we combine boats into a larger class we will expect participants to share their boat with others some of the time so that sailors have a chance to experience single and double handed sailing for at least part of the class. Along the lines of the Advanced Opti offering, this class will focus on refining skills, racing, optimizing boat speed and control, seamanship, cruising, navigation, and other areas appropriate to the age group.

    Boat requirements

Many students provide their own boats, especially at the laser and v-15 level. We do have some boats for rent through PMYC, especially Optis. Rentals for the entire course cost $100.00 per boat. A lottery will be held in early May for PMYC's rental boats. We generally have more demand than boats, so if you have a friend who may be able to lend you a needed boat, or are considering purchasing one, this should be pursued early and often! PMYC currently has 8 Optis of its own to rent, and a few lasers, but we do not rent V-15's at this time.

    Swim requirements

A swim license from the Bainbridge Aquatic Center or an equivalent credential from another facility is mandatory. If your student does not already have a swim license on file with the aquatic center, they can take the test and obtain one for free. Contact the pool to make arrangements. If you are not local and have a similar certification from another facility, let our coordinator know your situation and what you have. Our waiver form includes a release to allow us to verify swim licenses with the Bainbridge Aquatic center directly, so you don't need to provide documentation unless you need alternate arrangements.

    Parent volunteer requirement

Parents are expected to volunteer for at least one day to support the instructors or coordinators. Sailing and boating skill is not a requirement, but it would be very helpful to know what level of skill you have on the water. This is a fun way to see what the program is all about first hand, and to enjoy some time on the water or at the clubhouse. Seeing children out on the water and learning something new that they can appreciate throughout life is a simple pleasure worth experiencing. We hope you are able to join us this season.

    Cost

2017 Sailing school cost for PMYC members is $225.00 Cost for non-members is $300.00    Boat rental cost for PMYC boats if available is $100.00 per per boat for the entire 7 day course. Rental lottery will be held May 1st and notifications emailed promptly.

Blake Island parent and kids overnight camp.

Leaving from Winslow dock 07/05, returning around 3:00 on 07/07 (Wed-Fri)

Members $125.00 per child, chaperone rides free.

Non-members $150.00 per child, chaperone rides free.

Not included: Boat rental fee if not providing child's own boat. Park Campground fee, food, and camping gear to be provided by participants.

PMYC will provide chase boats and supervision during transit to and from Blake island and during the intervening Thursday from 9:00-3:00. Chaperones will be responsible for their children at all other times, but we plan to do many things as a group.

A new camp offering this year, this is an opportunity to spend a few days sailing to and exploring our neighbor to the south, Blake Island State Park.

    Here's how it'll work:

Weather and conditions permitting, we will depart from the public dock in Winslow on Wednesday morning, July 5th. Kids will sail in their own boats as part of a flotilla with a parent chaperone coming along in a one of our powered chase boats or in their own sail or power boat if they have one. Our goal is to make camp on Blake island by the end of the day, wherever space permits. (there are multiple boat-in only campgrounds on Blake island, but they are only available on a first come-first served basis). Participants must provide their own camping gear and chow, but we will transport it on one of our chase boats unless you are coming on your own boat and can bring it yourself.

Upon arrival we will have 2 nights on the island to explore on foot and by boat. Blake Island State park has numerous hiking trails, a playground, and facilities which vary depending on what side of the island we end up on. The west side campground is right on the beach with a fantastic sunset view of the Olympics, but has only basic pit-style bathrooms. The east campground is better equipped, but also more crowded. We will attempt to set up shop on the more rustic and lovely west side if possible.

Eligible youth sailors will need to be very capable intermediate level or better sailors. Optis, lasers, or V-15's are all eligible. PMYC has several Optis and a few lasers potentially available to rent. Other sailing dinghies that participants may seek to use will be considered on a case by case basis.

    Q & A:

Does a parent need to attend?

-We would like to have at least one adult chaperone in attendance for each youth camper. A parent may chaperone more than one child. We do not have staff to provide oversight for youth participants around the clock. Chaperones will be responsible for the behavior and safety of the children in their charge while on the island. One parent may chaperone more than one child. We may consider a having a chaperone be responsible for multiple siblings or a friend of their child who is also participating. But preference will be given to families first.

Can multiple parents or non-sailing kids come too?

-That will depend on how many sailors and chaperones we have, and how many boats are available to carry them. Individual parents with one or more of their own children sailing will have first dibs.

    What are the "camp times"?

-The camp is intended to provide oversight during the day while on the water to and from the island and from roughly 9:00 - 3:00 during the interim day (Thursday). Chaperones will be responsible during other times, but there is an expectation that we will be doing things as a group and hanging out together during the mornings and evenings. But individual break-outs are also fine. The goal is to have fun and explore and give us all a bit of adventure.

What costs are included in the camp?

Camping charges payable to Blake Island State Park will be the responsibility of participants. Food and supplies are also to be provided by participants.

As with all PMYC sailing school programs, this is a "bring your own boat" offering. We have a few rental Optis and lasers which will be available for kids who do not have their own boats. Chase boats will be provided for chaperones and staff.

    What about weather?

This camp offering will be subject to cancellation if weather conditions are not appropriate for crossing open water in small boats. Rain alone would not normally be a cause for cancellation, but high winds or other adverse conditions would be.

    How many people can go?

-We would expect a total head count including kids, chaperones and staff to not exceed 20-30 people. We may need to limit that number further depending on chase boat availability and kid to chaperone ratios.

    Requirements:

All children must have a Bainbridge Aquatic center swim license or equivalent.

All PMYC camps are "bring your own boat" but we do have several Optis and a few lasers for rent. Rental boats for this 3 day camp will add $25.00 to the camp cost per boat.

Each child must have one adult chaperone in attendance. Chaperones are allowed to bring more than one child.

Swallows and Amazons sail camp for Opti intermediate and advanced sailors.

This week long 9:00 - 3:00 camp is inspired by the children's adventure books of the same name.

This camp offers kids who've learned the basics of sailing a chance to continue to enjoying time around water and boats without the need to focus on racing as "what comes next". Continued skills development for each sailor will remain a focus of instructors, but this will be done in the context of "simply messing about in boats". And it will not all be boat time. Depending on weather and other variables, we look forward to exploring sailing to places in and near Port Madison where kids can explore, go for a hike in the woods, play some outdoor games, and try out new things, like making fire, building shelter, finding food in the wild, observing nature, and so on. In the Swallows and Amazons series, boats are a vehicle for adventure and discovery in the great outdoors, and that is what this camp is all about.

Any Opti sailors who have already participated in intermediate or higher level offerings are eligible. Developing beginners who are ready to progress to the intermediate level may also be qualified. This may include new sailors who have recently completed our June Beginner Opti Sailing school program, but it will depend on the student. If you expect your new sailor is likely to become a "water rat", and you think they are likely to progress to appropriate skills in time for one of the Swallows and Amazons camps, feel free to register and we will check in during the season to see how your sailor is progressing.

    Requirements:

    1. - Bainbridge Aquatic Center swim license or equivalent.

    2. - All PMYC camps are "bring your own boat", but we do have Opti's avaiable to rent for an additional $50.00 for this camp.

    Camp runs 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM M-F (5 days)

Cost for non-members $275.00 (plus rental if needed)

Cost for members $225.00 (plus rental if needed)

Beginner Opti full day for age 10-13 to about 125 lbs.

    Requirements:

    1. - Bainbridge Aquatic Center swim license or equivalent.

    2. - All PMYC camps are "bring your own boat", but we do have Opti's avaiable to rent for an additional $50.00.

    Camp runs 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM M-F (5 days)

This is a bring your own boat offering. If you do not have your own Opti, PMYC has boats to rent for this camp which adds $50.00 to the total cost.

    Cost:

Non-members $275.00 (plus rental if needed)

members $225.00 (plus rental if needed)
