A new camp offering this year, this is an opportunity to spend a few days sailing to and exploring our neighbor to the south, Blake Island State Park.
Here's how it'll work:
Weather and conditions permitting, we will depart from the public dock in Winslow on Wednesday morning, July 5th. Kids will sail in their own boats as part of a flotilla with a parent chaperone coming along in a one of our powered chase boats or in their own sail or power boat if they have one. Our goal is to make camp on Blake island by the end of the day, wherever space permits. (there are multiple boat-in only campgrounds on Blake island, but they are only available on a first come-first served basis). Participants must provide their own camping gear and chow, but we will transport it on one of our chase boats unless you are coming on your own boat and can bring it yourself.
Upon arrival we will have 2 nights on the island to explore on foot and by boat. Blake Island State park has numerous hiking trails, a playground, and facilities which vary depending on what side of the island we end up on. The west side campground is right on the beach with a fantastic sunset view of the Olympics, but has only basic pit-style bathrooms. The east campground is better equipped, but also more crowded. We will attempt to set up shop on the more rustic and lovely west side if possible.
Eligible youth sailors will need to be very capable intermediate level or better sailors. Optis, lasers, or V-15's are all eligible. PMYC has several Optis and a few lasers potentially available to rent. Other sailing dinghies that participants may seek to use will be considered on a case by case basis.
Q & A:
Does a parent need to attend?
-We would like to have at least one adult chaperone in attendance for each youth camper. A parent may chaperone more than one child. We do not have staff to provide oversight for youth participants around the clock. Chaperones will be responsible for the behavior and safety of the children in their charge while on the island. One parent may chaperone more than one child. We may consider a having a chaperone be responsible for multiple siblings or a friend of their child who is also participating. But preference will be given to families first.
Can multiple parents or non-sailing kids come too?
-That will depend on how many sailors and chaperones we have, and how many boats are available to carry them. Individual parents with one or more of their own children sailing will have first dibs.
What are the "camp times"?
-The camp is intended to provide oversight during the day while on the water to and from the island and from roughly 9:00 - 3:00 during the interim day (Thursday). Chaperones will be responsible during other times, but there is an expectation that we will be doing things as a group and hanging out together during the mornings and evenings. But individual break-outs are also fine. The goal is to have fun and explore and give us all a bit of adventure.
What costs are included in the camp?
Camping charges payable to Blake Island State Park will be the responsibility of participants. Food and supplies are also to be provided by participants.
As with all PMYC sailing school programs, this is a "bring your own boat" offering. We have a few rental Optis and lasers which will be available for kids who do not have their own boats. Chase boats will be provided for chaperones and staff.
What about weather?
This camp offering will be subject to cancellation if weather conditions are not appropriate for crossing open water in small boats. Rain alone would not normally be a cause for cancellation, but high winds or other adverse conditions would be.
How many people can go?
-We would expect a total head count including kids, chaperones and staff to not exceed 20-30 people. We may need to limit that number further depending on chase boat availability and kid to chaperone ratios.
All children must have a Bainbridge Aquatic center swim license or equivalent.
All PMYC camps are "bring your own boat" but we do have several Optis and a few lasers for rent. Rental boats for this 3 day camp will add $25.00 to the camp cost per boat.
Each child must have one adult chaperone in attendance. Chaperones are allowed to bring more than one child.
